Aston Villa Women battled to a goalless draw against Manchester City in the Women's Super League on Sunday. The result leaves Carla Ward's side ninth in the table with one point from their opening two fixtures, having drawn 1-1 with Chelsea on the opening day.
Manchester City, who began the day second in the table, dominated possession but found a resolute Villa defence difficult to break down. The home side created the clearer chances in a tight first half, with Villa goalkeeper Hannah Hampton making a key save to keep the scores level. Villa grew into the game after the interval and had opportunities of their own on the counter-attack, but neither side could find a decisive finish.
This stalemate continues a pattern of closely contested matches between the two sides at Villa Park. The previous meeting there in March 2025 also finished 0-0 in the WSL. Manchester City had won the two encounters prior to that, including a 6-1 victory at the Academy Stadium in December 2024 and a 2-0 win in an FA Cup quarter-final in March 2024.
The point extends Villa's unbeaten run in the league to two matches, following their opening-day draw with Chelsea. That 1-1 result saw them come from behind after Lauren James' early opener, with the equaliser coming via a Chelsea own goal. Their pre-season preparations included a mixed set of friendly results, with a win against Paris FC but defeats to Lyon and London City Lionesses.
The defensive unit was the foundation of the point, with Hampton's assured handling and a disciplined back line frustrating a City attack that had scored three in their first game. Manager Carla Ward praised the collective effort in her post-match comments. "The application from the group was exactly what we asked for," she said. "We stood up to the pressure and showed real character to take something from the game."
The team now looks ahead to their next WSL fixture, with the full schedule available on our standings page, which shows Villa two points behind early leaders Liverpool.
